Fashion Week is always special. And strangely, always, each and every year, in a different way.
For me, arriving there one year since the last time felt strange. So much has happened in one year, and quite literally months of my life had been devoted to a very important project, both for myself and for the Australian fashion industry. Those of you who know me, and now there are many, you will know that that project was none other than the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Runway, held in April of this year. I was thrilled to be able to work with, encourage, and develop the designers with whom I was so closely aligned on this project, as well as developing the concept in this country of working with international big guns who see benefit in fashion collaboration. This has long been my vision and I hope to see much more of it in the future.
Back however to the subject at hand. Fashion Week this year was quiet. Really quiet. I did think for the first couple of days I was there that I was imagining things until a few of my industry colleagues commented on the same thing. Fortunately, mid week things started to pick up and life at fashion week was quite buzzy again. It was great to catch up with the usual suspects and get into our usual banter of whose writing what article, whose interviewing who, and which designers are perceived to be the next up and coming.
I put a lot of effort this year into bringing you real footage on the backstage life and the general mood of the place.
Fashion Week, as glam as it sounds is HARD work.
The days are wonderful but long, the conservations, fascinating but exhausting, and the memories post shows, full of heart.
Realistically the busiest of weeks, follow after the event is wrapped up, making sure that follow up calls and promises of planned meetings are not broken.
In my case, I buzzed off to China for 10 days very soon after to have a long awaited holiday. Alas, whilst I was there I was struck down with influenza and am still recovering. If you are reading this thinking that you have not heard from me, I promise you, you will. Soon.
If you are an Australian fashion devotee, you will know that Camilla and Marc opened fashion week this year. I was struck by their collection. It had a positively old fashioned feel to it which I loved. Some of the pieces which were my most favourite were almost reminiscent of American pioneering days; an Aamish quality if you like. I noted this trend of modest design across the week, if not entire collections, the odd piece from this collection or that. The other aspect which I noticed on repeat was the return to the garment being functional. Truly functional and wearable! This was something I noticed was commented upon and spoken about a lot during the week, and many noted that it was such a long time that they had seen this. I know that a lot of people are really into the athe-leisure but it was just so refreshing to see “real clothes”, “real fabric”, and “real design”. I don’t really have anything against the more casual applications of fashion but let’s face it, good tailoring is pretty hard to beat.
Anyhow, inspiration is at hand with lots of Fashion Week 2018 to follow in the coming weeks.
For now, welcome to BACKSTAGE …
