This journey of self responsibility begins with the understanding that everything – without exception – that is in our lives and our experience is our own creation.
Barbara Callan
Every now and again, I write an editorial piece which steers away slightly from the focus of fashion.
Our lives are so full of work, business, family, networking and goal setting that I thought it would be helpful to introduce my audience to someone who has made coaching ‘her life’.
Barbara Callan is an intuitive consultant whose work is becoming more and more known.
She is someone who understands the intrinsic details of working with energy. She believes we are all “energy first and physical second”.
Of course, traditional life and business coaching is something we have all been aware of, and had access to, for quite some time. The idea of placing our goals in plain sight via the vehicle of consistent and accountable coaching, is a perfectly common sense idea.
Slightly different however, is that Barbara encourages people to take responsibility for their own lives to expand themselves energetically, to understand the importance of meditation, and to maintain vigilant awareness of being in the moment, to move closer to our dream life.
I sat down with Barbara to ask her some questions that were on my mind.
Enjoy xx

How would you describe “energy”?
BC
Energy is the living force or frequency that surrounds all living things. It has been successfully photographed using Kirlian photography, described as “a technique for recording photographic images of corona discharges and hence the auras of living creatures.” When we work at the energetic level we can effect changes at the physical level which is really cool. Our thoughts and feelings affect our energy field, which in turn affects our body.
LM
As an Intuitive Consultant how do you hope to help people in their lives?
BC
I have the ability to tune in to someone’s energy field and to feel what is going on in their lives. I can see and experience blocks that people may be experiencing which are stopping them moving forward. Together we work to remove these and understand them so that they do not reappear. I provide inspiration, clarity and direction. I work by distance with clients all over the world, as energy is not bound by time and space.
LM
How does one take responsibility for their own growth and expansion?
BC
This journey of self responsibility begins with the understanding that everything – without exception – that is in our lives and our experience is our own creation. It is our thoughts and emotions that create the reality. When we really get this, not only are we far more vigilant with our thoughts but it is exciting to see that we can be the creators of our own experience. Of course this means that we look at what is current in our lives, decide whether we like it or not, get the lessons that come with the experiences and then move on. We only keep repeating patterns of experience because we have not got the lesson. Sometimes we need someone to help us to see what those patterns are and how to move past them.
LM
How do you de-mystify your work to someone who has not worked with someone like you before?
BC
There is great benefit here in quantum physics. People who are new to the idea that there is anything beyond the physical plane, would find it difficult to dispute the work of people such as Dr Joe Dispenza, or Joseph Gallenberger.
Mainstream and scientific thinking is fast catching up with ancient knowledge and so people are waking up from the dream where they thought that the physical plane was the only reality. All I am doing is tuning in to the field of thought that is surrounding a person. The closer this field is to the body the nearer manifestation it is.
LM
In the course of your work what is it that you find most significantly blocks a person’s progress in living their best dynamic life?
BC
Fear and uncertainty are the biggest causes of resistance or blockage. When we are constantly surrounded with a society and media that has a lack mentality, we fear that we will run out of money, opportunity or that goal we are reaching for. When we realise that fear is a frequency we can see how it would block the very thing we seek coming towards us. The work here is to focus on love, compassion, abundance and joy. This may appear unrealistic when we are stuck in habit and not ready to move, but it really is the best way to move yourself out of fear. Moving the body physically is also a great way to shift this energy.
LM
How do you read someone’s energy field?
BC
Being empathic and using that skill consciously means that I step out of my reality or consciousness and then energetically ‘reach over’ and tune into their field. I then feel what they are feeling (quite literally) and I can see (with my eyes shut) what is going on for them. This will come in pictures which may be metaphoric or real. Often words will flow at a rapid pace as if from nowhere which is known as channeling.
LM
Do you need to actually sit with a person to work with them?
BC
Interesting question!
Energy is not bound by time and space and as I work with my eyes shut, I do not need someone to be in front of me. Many of my clients are in other countries, in different time zones and yet it is as if they in the room with me. If they want to ask about someone else, all I need is a first name and I will tune in as that too has a frequency.
LM
Have you seen people’s businesses develop once they begin working with you?
BC
Indeed I have and that has been a privilege to see the dreams come into reality. Our businesses are just a reflection of where we ourselves are and when we begin to work on ourselves and move our blocks, the business also grows.
LM
How long do you need to work with people to see results?
BC
Sometimes it will take a few months and sometimes it will take a few sessions.
I have clients that I have worked with over a period of 18 months to see their business expanding and flourishing.
Certainly it does not happen in one session. Some clients digest and work on things at their own pace and then drop back in for a regular check up. This seems to be a good formula.
LM
What commitment of time would you suggest is necessary for progress?
BC
This of course is individual but for most people a minimum of six sessions over a period will have them steering the right course. It’s like the hand on the tiller.
LM
What common trait have you noticed in successful people?
BC
Successful people tend to be self reflective, understanding that the universe is constantly giving them feedback and that all they need to do is pay attention to that, get the lesson or message and act on it. Successful people are also intuitive and know to act on those feelings and hunches that come out of left field.
LM
What is it about modern living that makes energy work so important for a person’s wellbeing?
BC
Our current environment is so overstimulated that we must be committed to stepping outside of the noise and rush to take time to stop and listen. Many successful people know that to meditate is to have access to such quietness, where inspiration and creativity can be accessed. Taking time to be with oneself in whatever form that takes is essential for physical and mental wellbeing.
LM
Are there any specific things that people take for granted in their life that people should be trying to avoid?
BC
Again this is the question of an over stimulated environment where we appear to need to know everything. I do not watch the news or read newspapers as there are not very many uplifting stories and I need my energy to be in a good space. Television pacifies the brain as there is usually no eye movement, just staring. This tends to dull the brain and that is why we find it relaxing. Being out in nature whether it is in the bush or at the beach, recharges our batteries and brings us back into balance.
LM
Are there any less obvious things that most people don’t do, that they really should be doing to achieve one’s greatest potential?
BC
Listening to that inner voice and seeing how the universe is constantly giving us feedback as this lets us know how we are doing and what we need to do more of, or less of.
An easy way of moving towards potential is to do what brings us joy and makes us feels good as that is where there is alignment with who we really are.
LM
Love it! Who doesn’t want to be “the best they can be”?
